Review from Newegg:
Pros: Everything. Being able to make it vibrate only when someone calls... This is really great for deer hunting. I bought these for deer season this year and it was great. I was watching a little buck when all the sudden it vibrated and the deer didnt even respont..... I then took the shot and got my deer. I love this radio. Well worth the money. Oh and there is an option to change to listen to the local weather Great
Cons: None.

First of all, forget the 12 miles under normal urban circumstances. Given the generally line-of-sight propagation of UHF signals, none of the handhelds, including commercial and amateur, will deliver 12 miles under normal conditions. In an urban setting with houses and buildings, expect something more resembling one and a half miles of consistent communication. Two to five miles may be expected over more open territory.
Having said that, our family has been quite pleased with the pair we purchased. They have put some thought into the ergonomic design of this radio. It is not nearly as heavy or bulky as our older, commercial quality HT. It fits securely in the hand, has a clear display with a signal strength meter, clear sound quality, and a convenient placement of controls. The receiver appears to be a significant improvement over its predecessor, the PR 4000. It can use either subaudible tone or digital coded squelch; these are useful in a crowded environment.
Especially nice is the signal strength meter that registers all activity on the channel whether or not it actually opens the squelch. If you are not in a conversation, it lets you know there is other activity on the channel. If you are in a conversation, it alerts you to the fact your radio may not be interpreting the DCS word or the subaudible tone due to interference. That way, you may open up the squelch manually using the monitor button, so you do not miss parts of your party's transmission.
Even though I have access to commercial quality equipment, I find myself using the PR 4700 more and more of the time for simplex operations.
My biggest disappointment is how all of the manufacturers are exaggerating the range claims. My guess is Cobra probably feels like it has to use the same standards for marketing as other manufacturers, or lose in the competition.

Nice radio, but range as always is exaggerated, January 19, 2006
By Washington FF - See all my reviews
I bought these radios for backpacking and travel. While they have great features and great voice quality, the range is grossly overexaggerated. All FRS radio manufacturers do this and it should be considered false adverstising, in my opinion. Cobra says the PR4700 has a range of 12 miles, I found the range to actually be around 6 miles over open space and 2-3 miles in the city. It still works for my use, but it makes me wonder what the actual range is of FRS radios that advertise a range of 5 miles? Coming from a guy who works in public safety where we use $500.00 UHF and VHF radios for communication, I can tell you our radios can barely reach 10 miles between portables without a repeater. It would seem unrealistic that any $50.00 FRS radio will ever get close to this range. As long as you keep your expectations reasonable, you'll probably be very happy with this radio.

The new pair of walkie and talkie work well. The water proof feature makes me comfortable. I didn't dip them in the water though. They have more sub codes which eliminate the conflict with other people. The charging dock and batties are good deal.
The size is bigger than I expected. I don't have the original headset. My old headset for Motorola walkie talkie works. But I can hear the voice from the speaker even when the headset is plugged in. Maybe I should try Cobra headset.
